Tri School
WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES EDMONTON HAS NEW TRI SCHOOL PROGRAMWTS Edmonton has a goal of providing 10,000 youth the opportunity to participate in their first triathlon and encourage active living. This goal is an initiative for our legacy project moving into the 2020 Grand Final. WTS Edmonton has been hosting international events for 20 years and our passion for triathlon continues to grow each year. We are hoping to use our passion for triathlon to empower youth to continue with a healthy active lifestyle. The framework of our program introduces youth to a multisport and allows students to try all three sports; swimming, biking and running. Our ultimate goal is to ensure youth have fun in a positive learning environment and continue to be active. Triathlon tends to intimidate adults but if we show the children just how fun it is, at this young age, that barrier is removed and they can continue to participate in this lifelong activity!
What to expect?Lead by Coach Luis, students will be offered an engaging new learning opportunity both inside and outside the classroom. A visual presentation explaining triathlon, including videos show the students exactly how a triathlon works. Over the following days they will be exposed to multisport activities such as: cooperative and team building games, running and simulated swimming and cycling. |
Luis Franco was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. He entered the triathlon world twenty-one years ago when he was lucky enough to be part of the first triathlon team in Guadalajara (TRIXAL) and was coached by one of the pioneers of Triathlon in Mexico (Psyc. Gustavo Nuño). On this team, he had the opportunity to learn from not only his coach but from the elite athletes on his team as well. With TRIXAL, he competed in many different formats, including Sprint, Olympic Distance, 70.3 and full Ironman’s. In 2005 he represented Mexico in the World Championships in Hawaii as an age grouper and has completed two full Ironmans; one in Tempe Arizona in 2011 and the other in Cozumel in 2012. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Sports, Specializing in Track and Field in 2010 and graduated top of his class. He is a certified level 2 triathlon coach by the Mexican Triathlon Federation (ITU accredited) and is currently completing level 3, which focuses more on elite performance. Luis is a Certified NCCP Community Triathlon Coach. He attended the ITU Science and Triathlon World Conference in Edmonton in December of 2017. Luis enjoys being a lifelong learner and is currently taking NCCP multisport modules that will enhance his coaching abilities. Luis brings us twelve years of coaching experience. This includes coaching extracurricular classes (track and field, basketball, volleyball, swimming, soccer), 10 years as a spin instructor, his own running team and his own triathlon team. Luis has 6 years of experience as a physical education teacher where 3 of those years were in an Alberta Accredited International School. In 2018, Luis was one of the coaches for a group of athletes at the Alberta Summer Games in Grande Prairie and also took a group of athletes to the Super League Triathlon in Penticton, B.C. Luis began coaching with the ETA as a volunteer in the summer of 2016 and began working as an assistant coach in March of 2017. He is also working with the ITU WTS Edmonton as a Community Triathlon Development Coordinator and is the lead facilitator of the Tri@School Program. |
