Roles Description
Access Control
  • Control public accesses areas
  • Be visible in your assigned areaKnowledge of stadium layout and venue maps
  • Remain at your post until dismissed by the security captain
  • Manage accreditation system
  • Printing all accreditation
  • Understanding accredited areas
  • Distribution of accreditation to appropriate groups
Aid Station
  • Assist set up of water stations
  • Hand out water to athletes
  • Run course
  • Finish line
  • Replenish water at station
  • Keep area debris free
Bag Check
  • Assist in bag check tent
  • Receiving and returning bags to athletes
Beer Tent
  • Must have ProServe
Course Marshall - Bike

A crucial and important role:

  • Ensure course remains clear of pedestrians
  • Ensure the safe flow of pedestrians across the course
  • Interact with the public at intersections
  • Keep the course clear of garbage
Course Marshall - Run
  • Keep the course clear for athletes
  • Ensure course remains clear of pedestrians
  • Ensure the safe flow of pedestrians across the run course
Doping Control
  • Attend doping control briefing.
  • Accompany athletes to doping control
Elite Lounge
  • Keep lounge tidy and clear for athletes
  • Hand out bags for athletes to put their clothes in
  • Make sure bottled water is available at all times
  • Assist technical officials if they need anything
Finish Line
  • Keeping finish line area secure and clear
  • Assist with the flow of athletes through the area
  • Moving equipment
  • Move barriers as directed by captain
Food Service
  • Assist with food services at volunteer orientation (pre-event)
  • Assist with volunteer food preparations
  • Deliver food to various areas of the site
  • Prepare fruit for athletes and deliver to the finish line
Information Service
  • Strong understanding of event and triathlon
  • Familiar with parking, transit and road closure for the event
  • Knowledge of Edmonton tourist attractions.
  • Familiar with training facilities and bike trails
  • Must have NLS certification
  • Responsible for athlete safety in the water
  • Will use paddle boards or kayaks on the lake (supplied)
  • Work with water safety captain to understand the marine plan

Media roles will vary:

  • Ensure media has all the information required
  • Escort media between media zones
  • Manage finish riser according to instructions
  • Assist media captain with media center hosting responsibilities
  • Carrying officials and media on the race course
  • (will require a short interview with motorcycle captain)
Package Stuffing
  • Be available prior to the event
  • Daytime hours
  • Place contents in an envelope for athletes, bibs, timing chip etc.
  • Be available to volunteer for package pick up (not a requirement)
Parking & Traffic
  • Assist at all the parking locations for the event
  • Direct vehicles to designated parking areas
  • Knowledge of roadways in and around Hawrelak Park
Registration & Package Pick Up
  • Assist with all aspects of athlete registration
  • Hand out race packages
  • Understand the event race schedule
Set Up
  • Must be available before the event
  • Assist with the build of the race venue
Special Events & Ceremonies
  • Assist with medal ceremonies
Swim Area Assistant
  • Assisting the technical officials
  • Keep swim area clean and secure
Swim Course
  • Keep swim start area clear of sand and other objects
  • Collect athletes extra clothing - place in the appropriate area
  • Assist officials with marshaling athletes
Swim Start
  • Assisting Swim Start Captain
  • Marshaling athletes to the start
  • Answering questions from athletes
Tear Down
  • Must be available after the event
  • Assist with race venue tear down and clean up
  • Assist the Timing Director with all aspects of timing
  • May be required to assist with manual timing
  • Manning the area where the timing equipment is located
  • Assist with posting race time and results
  • Collect and sort timing chips as the finish line
  • Assist technical officials to check in athletes
  • Directing athletes during check-in to the transition area
  • Transition marshall during the race
  • Minor set up of the transition area
  • Light lifting and moving of equipment
  • Keeping area clean and secure
  • Keep VIP tent clean & tidy
  • Help clear plates
Volunteer Services
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment
  • Attend volunteer fairs, expo
  • Assist with volunteer orientation
  • Uniform distribution and management
  • Check volunteers in at Hawrelak Park during race weekend
