September 7, 2016 (Edmonton) – For the first time, Canada will host two World Triathlon Series events in the same year – and those two events will be the only ones staged in the Americas during 2017. The other seven events in the series will be held in the Middle East, Australia, Japan and Europe.
Edmonton, which is part-way through a five-year hosting agreement with the International Triathlon Union (ITU), will be joined next year by Montreal. The two events will be held a week apart – on July 28-30 in Edmonton and August 5-6 in Montreal – to facilitate the world’s top triathletes to compete in both cities.
The decision by ITU on the 2017 venues was finalized by the Executive Committee during the recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Commenting on the news, Sheila O’Kelly, president and general manager of World Triathlon Series Edmonton, said: “I think the ITU decision to grant two WTS events to Canada in the same year – especially as the only events in the Americas - is a great tribute to the level or our organizational expertise in this country. As in the past two years, we will be staging sprint distances for the elite events, while the Montreal races will be the full Olympic distances.”
